South Kitsap High School rower Payton Brose made history February 7, 2019 by being the first oarswoman from the district to ever receive a Division I rowing scholarship. Gonzaga University is considered to have one of the stronger rowing programs on the west coast and extended the scholarship to Brose after seeing her dedication to rowing in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

“Payton is one of the most dedicated rowers I’ve seen, and we’re all incredibly proud to see the first of what we hope is many South Kitsap rowers to receive university rowing scholarships,” said Jake Brisson, head rowing coach.

South Kitsap High School’s crew team is the first public high school rowing program in Washington State. Their rowers compete in what’s becoming known as “Row Town, USA”, encompassing the greater Seattle area. The bestselling novel The Boys In The Boat brought international attention to the rich rowing history of the Puget Sound and the story of eight working-class Puget Sound rowers who won gold in the 1936 Olympics.

“When we started this program three years ago, not a single crew member had ever touched an oar. Now Payton is off to Gonzaga with a scholarship, and every time the team races they perform at a higher level,” said Charles Perkins, now retired coach and co-founder of the South Kitsap crew program. “The Wolves still race with equipment that is older and heavier than any of the competition, but that doesn’t stop them from getting faster every year.”

Payton Brose is currently enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program and maintains a 3.75 GPA, while also participating in the Athletic Medicine program. Brose attended South Kitsap public schools for her entire academic career and has been playing sports since the age of four, starting with soccer, basketball and karate. Brose starts classes at Gonzaga University this fall, where she plans to focus on biology and chemistry to further her knowledge in medical science. She was first introduced to rowing three years ago and is excited to join Gonzaga University’s crew team.
